Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken a significant step toward promoting environmental awareness by launching the CM Internship Climate Resilient Leadership Program. The initiative aims to foster environmental stewardship among young people, empowering them to take an active role in preserving the environment.

During the launch event, the CM announced the introduction of Pakistan’s first-ever smog hotline, “1373,” as a tool to address the ongoing smog crisis. Additionally, she directed that 1% of funds from development projects be allocated for tree plantation efforts, further underlining her administration’s commitment to sustainable development.

In a major announcement, the CM increased the stipend for interns participating in the program from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 60,000, highlighting the need to ensure job security for participants after completing the program. She emphasized that environmental internships should be viewed not just as opportunities but as essential responsibilities for building a greener Punjab.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif also stressed the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges, particularly smog. She called for collaboration between Pakistan and Indian Punjab, noting that solutions require more than just simple fixes. In an effort to raise awareness, she urged educational institutions to include smog-related curriculum from October 15 to November 15.

The CM also addressed the historical negligence in environmental management, calling for a more responsible approach to safeguarding the environment across Pakistan. She further reported intensified efforts against animal cruelty, reflecting a growing commitment to humane practices in Punjab.

In terms of air quality management, the CM outlined several ongoing efforts, including increased surveillance of industrial emissions and stricter measures to combat pollution from brick kilns and fat-melting factories. She also emphasized the importance of sustainable infrastructure for national progress.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb shared details about new environmental initiatives, including a vehicle inspection system and comprehensive climate change plans. She reiterated Punjab’s leadership in tackling climate challenges. Other notable figures present at the event included Provincial Ministers Azma Zahid Bokhari, Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, and Sher Ali Gorchani, as well as other key officials.
