Students and office workers in Pakistan look forward to the upcoming November 9 holiday, listed in the official gazette. Known as Iqbal Day, it commemorates poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s contributions to the nation.
Despite being in the gazette, the federal government has not officially announced this year’s holiday. If declared, it would give students and workers a welcome break from routine schedules.
November 9 falls on a Saturday, so many schools and colleges, already closed in Lahore due to smog, may not be affected. Offices, however, await clarity on whether they’ll get a long weekend.
Iqbal Day’s Importance
Iqbal Day celebrates Allama Iqbal, whose poetry inspired Pakistan’s independence movement. His ideas emphasized self-determination and a distinct Muslim identity.
Though it was previously removed, the holiday was reinstated two years ago, much to the public’s appreciation. Many see it as a day to reflect on Iqbal’s lasting influence on Pakistan’s culture and identity.
